Arsenal’s hopes of signing Viktor Gyökeres have taken a serious blow after a defiant statement from Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas made it clear the Portuguese club has no intention of backing down in negotiations.
In a public address, Varandas firmly responded to speculation surrounding Gyökeres’ absence from pre-season training and Arsenal’s ongoing attempts to bring the striker to the Emirates this summer. With the 26-year-old forward pushing for the move and reportedly refusing to report back to Sporting, tensions have escalated.
Varandas took a strong stance, saying:
“If they don’t want to pay Viktor’s fair market value, we’re very comfortable with that for the next three years.”
The statement underscores Sporting’s commitment to protecting their valuation of the Swedish-born striker, believed to be upwards of €80 million. Arsenal, who have been in talks with Gyökeres’ representatives and Sporting for several weeks, had hoped to strike a deal closer to €65–70 million, but that now appears increasingly unlikely without a major shift in approach.
The Sporting president also suggested that the current situation has made things even more complicated for the player himself, who is believed to have agreed personal terms with Arsenal and informed the club of his desire to move.
“This strategy is also making it more complicated for the player to leave,” Varandas added.
“Nobody is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.”
It’s a clear warning shot, not only to Gyökeres but also to Arsenal, that Sporting will not be strong-armed into accepting an offer they deem unacceptable. The president’s remarks hint at potential disciplinary measures, with the player now facing possible sanctions for his absence.
“We’re calm,” Varandas concluded.
“Everything will be resolved with the market closing, a hefty fine and an apology to the group.”
For Arsenal, who had shifted their attention to Gyökeres after encountering difficulties in negotiations for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško, this development comes at a frustrating time. Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have made signing a top-tier striker a priority this summer, but with time ticking and key targets proving difficult, their options may now narrow.
Gyökeres had a stellar season at Sporting, scoring over 40 goals across all competitions and emerging as one of Europe’s most in-demand centre-forwards. His physicality, pressing ability, and instinct in front of goal make him a strong fit for Arteta’s system, and his desire to move to the Premier League has never been in doubt.
However, unless Arsenal are willing to significantly improve their financial offer to meet Sporting’s valuation, a deal looks unlikely — at least in the short term. Whether this hardline stance from Varandas is a negotiation tactic or a firm blockade remains to be seen, but for now, Arsenal must reassess and consider their next move.
