Arsenal appear to be on the verge of securing their first major signing of the summer transfer window, with reports indicating that Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi is at an advanced stage in negotiations with the Gunners. According to journalist David Ornstein, there is a strong belief within the club that Zubimendi will be joining Arsenal ahead of next season.
Speaking during The Athletic FC Q&A, Ornstein provided a key update on Arsenal’s transfer plans, particularly regarding the highly-rated Spanish midfielder.
“As far as we know, Martin Zubimendi is at a very advanced stage & the anticipation inside Arsenal is that he’s coming in. If that gets completed, it’s a significant financial outlay. As will be the case if/when a striker is signed,” Ornstein stated.
Zubimendi has been a long-term target for Arsenal, with the club showing interest in him for several transfer windows. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder has been a standout performer for Real Sociedad, impressing with his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and defensive awareness. His arrival would provide Mikel Arteta with another high-quality option in midfield, potentially forming a formidable trio alongside Declan Rice and club captain Martin Ødegaard.
If Zubimendi joins Arsenal, it could signal a shift in the club’s midfield dynamics. The futures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho remain uncertain, with reports suggesting that both players could leave in the summer. Partey, who has struggled with injuries this season, has been linked with a move away, while Jorginho’s contract situation remains unclear.
Zubimendi’s potential signing would bring long-term stability to Arsenal’s midfield, offering a player who excels in breaking up opposition play and dictating the tempo. His ability to progress the ball forward could also ease some of the creative burden on Ødegaard.
Ornstein also hinted that Arsenal’s summer business will not stop with Zubimendi. The Gunners are expected to make significant investments, with a striker also high on their list of priorities. The club has been linked with a number of attacking options, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
With Arsenal currently second in the Premier League table after 29 games and pushing for their first league title since 2004, the upcoming transfer window will be crucial in determining whether they can maintain their progress and challenge at the highest level next season.
Arsenal fans will be eagerly awaiting official confirmation of Zubimendi’s potential arrival, as the Spanish midfielder could be a key addition to Arteta’s squad. With the club set for a busy summer, the Gunners look determined to build on their recent progress and strengthen in key areas.
If Zubimendi does sign, it would be a major statement of intent from Arsenal, reinforcing their ambitions to remain competitive at the top of English and European football.
