Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has opened up on Mikel Merino’s unexpected role as a striker, praising the Spaniard’s adaptability and dedication as he helps the team navigate their current attacking crisis.
With key forwards sidelined due to injury, Arteta has been forced to turn to Merino as an emergency option up front—a role he has never played before in his career. Despite the unusual circumstances, the Arsenal boss has been thoroughly impressed with how the midfielder has handled the challenge.
Speaking to Arsenal Media, Arteta highlighted Merino’s commitment to making the most of his temporary attacking role.
“And we know that, that was the emergency situation that we are in at the moment, but the way he’s approaching it is incredible,” Arteta said.
“He wants to understand everything, he wants to learn from it, he’s very critical of himself all the time and at the end, the reality is that he’s winning football matches for us, which is incredible. He’s never played in that position before in his life.”
Merino’s willingness to adapt has been crucial for Arsenal, as the team remains in contention for silverware despite their attacking setbacks. The midfielder’s intelligence and physical presence have allowed him to contribute in unexpected ways, giving Arsenal a valuable option while their usual attackers recover.
The Spaniard has not only taken on the role but has also been decisive in key moments. His ability to hold up play, link up with teammates, and even find the back of the net has helped Arsenal maintain their attacking threat.
Arteta’s trust in Merino reflects the team’s flexibility and resilience, showcasing the squad’s willingness to step up in difficult situations. Arsenal’s tactical approach has evolved to accommodate Merino’s strengths, and his performances have helped the Gunners grind out crucial results.
As Arsenal push forward in both the Premier League and Champions League, Arteta will be hoping to have his regular strikers back sooner rather than later. However, Merino’s contributions in this emergency role may give Arteta more options moving forward, perhaps using the Spaniard in more advanced positions when needed.
For now, Arsenal fans will appreciate Merino’s efforts in an unfamiliar role, and with the Gunners still fighting for major honors, every contribution counts.
