Arsenal fans receive an interesting update on Mikel Merino joining their squad
Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino has hit a snag, with the two clubs remaining some way apart in their valuations for the Spanish international. The Independent reports that Sociedad are holding out for a fee of €35 million, while Arsenal are aiming to pay closer to €25 million.
This impasse has stalled the potential transfer, despite the Gunners’ strong interest in the 27-year-old. Merino, who enjoyed a stellar 2023-24 season with Sociedad, scoring five goals and providing three assists, has caught the eye of several clubs, including Arsenal, who are looking to add depth and experience to their midfield.
The discrepancy in valuation stems from the different priorities of both clubs. Real Sociedad, seeking to maintain their competitive edge, are reluctant to let go of a key player for a bargain price. Arsenal, on the other hand, are mindful of their budget and aiming to secure a value-for-money deal.
With the transfer window in full swing, both clubs will be keen to reach an agreement soon. However, the current gap in their valuations suggests that negotiations will be protracted and potentially difficult.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have already completed the signing of left-back Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, for a fee believed to be around €45 million. The Italian is expected to add competition for a starting spot at the Emirates, as the Gunners seek to build upon their impressive 2023-24 campaign.
While the Calafiori transfer signals Arsenal’s ambition in the transfer market, the club will need to resolve their differences with Sociedad if they are to secure the services of Mikel Merino.
