Arsenal’s long-running pursuit of Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres is now entering its final stages, with journalist Ben Jacobs reporting that the player is expected to receive permission to undergo a medical in north London within the next 24 hours. After weeks of back-and-forth negotiations with Sporting Lisbon, the Gunners are finally on the brink of sealing one of the most anticipated transfers of the summer.
Gyökeres has been Arsenal’s primary target up front, and progress behind the scenes has accelerated in recent days following a verbal agreement between all parties. The structure of the deal—worth around €63.5 million fixed plus €10 million in add-ons—has been accepted by Sporting, and the final hurdle is now administrative: granting the player official clearance for his medical.
As per Ben Jacobs, Arsenal are confident that permission for Gyökeres to travel and complete his medical will be granted within the next day. Once that happens, the Swedish international will travel to the UK and undergo the necessary checks before signing his long-term contract, believed to be a five-year deal running until 2030.
While some delays were caused by agent fees and Sporting’s firm stance on valuation, those issues have been smoothed out in recent days. The player’s agent has reportedly agreed to reduce his commission, and Sporting, having held firm on their price, are now satisfied with the final package.
Mikel Arteta has remained calm and patient throughout the process, insisting that Arsenal would only move for the right player, on the right terms. His belief in Gyökeres as the ideal profile for his system has been unwavering. The 26-year-old’s physicality, intensity, and elite finishing make him a perfect fit for Arsenal’s pressing style and positional play.
Arteta recently acknowledged that the squad was short on numbers in attack and stressed the need to improve both depth and quality. With Gyökeres now close to arrival, the Spaniard is finally set to add a reliable, goalscoring No. 9 to his attacking arsenal.
Despite interest from other top European clubs, Gyökeres made it clear that he only wanted Arsenal. That determination has helped facilitate the deal, with the striker reportedly turning down other offers and urging his representatives to prioritise a move to the Emirates.
Last season, Gyökeres delivered a sensational campaign with 43 goals and 15 assists in all competitions for Sporting, marking himself out as one of Europe’s most in-form forwards. Arsenal believe that form will translate to the Premier League and that he can become a decisive figure in their quest for silverware.
Once the medical is completed and the contract signed, Arsenal are expected to officially unveil Gyökeres as their latest summer signing. Depending on the timing, he may still be able to join the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia.
For now, Arsenal fans can breathe a sigh of relief—the long chase for a striker is nearly over. Viktor Gyökeres is on the verge of becoming a Gunner.
