Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed the club’s transfer plans during his latest press conference, offering a carefully worded response when asked about the club’s pursuit of Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres. Though he refrained from naming the Swedish international directly, Arteta acknowledged the need to reinforce his squad this summer, both in terms of numbers and quality.
“You know I cannot comment on any player that is not part of our group yet,” Arteta said, when quizzed about Gyökeres. “There’s still a long time in the window and we are seeking [to add]. In terms of numbers, we are short and we have to improve depth and quality.”
While the Arsenal boss remained diplomatic, his words reinforced what many already know: Arsenal are firmly in the market for attacking reinforcements. The club’s interest in Gyökeres is well-documented, with reports indicating that they have agreed a base fee with Sporting, and are now negotiating over the structure of bonuses. The deal, which could rise to nearly £68 million, remains one of the most talked-about moves of the summer.
Arteta’s statement underlines a wider truth about the state of his squad. Despite a strong 2024/25 campaign, which saw the Gunners push on multiple fronts, there were moments when a lack of depth proved costly. Injuries to key forwards, including Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, left the team exposed in crucial periods. The need for a powerful, consistent centre-forward is clear—and Gyökeres fits that profile.
The 26-year-old Swedish international enjoyed a sensational season with Sporting, netting 43 goals and providing 15 assists in all competitions. His blend of physicality, work rate, and clinical finishing has caught the eye of several top clubs, but Arsenal appear to be leading the chase. Gyökeres’ profile aligns perfectly with what Arteta is looking for: a striker capable of pressing from the front, linking play, and scoring goals at the highest level.
If Arsenal are to mount another serious title challenge and go deep into the Champions League, adding a striker of Gyökeres’ calibre would be a major statement of intent.
Beyond Gyökeres, Arteta and Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta are expected to remain busy this summer. The Gunners are also looking to reinforce in midfield and defence, with players like Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori linked in recent weeks.
“We have a lot of competitions this season, and we know the level required,” Arteta added. “We want to build a squad that can handle those demands and be competitive in every match.”
With pre-season underway and a tour of Asia looming, the pressure is on for Arsenal to complete their key business early. Arteta’s comments suggest that while patience is required, the club are working hard behind the scenes to bring in the right players. Whether or not Gyökeres is the first to arrive remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Arsenal aren’t done yet.
