Arsenal are facing a major injury headache ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, with six first-team players ruled out due to various injuries.
The Gunners, who have impressed throughout their European campaign, will have to navigate the clash without several important names across defence, midfield, and attack — a daunting task against a PSG side loaded with attacking firepower.
Riccardo Calafiori – Knee Injury
Defender Riccardo Calafiori will not be available for the match against PSG. The Italian, who has added depth and quality to Mikel Arteta’s backline this season, is sidelined with a knee injury and is not expected to return until April 30, 2025 — after the first leg has already been played.
Jorginho – Rib Injury
In midfield, Arsenal will be without the experience and composure of Jorginho. The former Chelsea man has been nursing a rib injury and will only return on May 4, meaning he misses the all-important first encounter with the Parisians. His absence leaves a gap in Arsenal’s ability to control possession and tempo in midfield.
Gabriel Jesus –
Arsenal’s attacking options will also be thinner, with Gabriel Jesus ruled out until June 1. The Brazilian forward’s absence is a blow to Arteta’s plans, as Jesus’ movement, experience in big games, and work rate could have been key weapons against a PSG side known for their attacking flair but defensive vulnerabilities.
Takehiro Tomiyasu – Knee Injury
Defensive utility man Takehiro Tomiyasu, who could have provided crucial cover across the backline, is also unavailable due to a knee injury. The Japanese international, admired for his versatility and defensive solidity, will not return until June 1 either, missing both legs of the semi-final if Arsenal progress.
Kai Havertz – Hamstring Injury
Kai Havertz’s hamstring injury is another major setback for Arsenal. The German international has been a key figure in Arsenal’s recent success, delivering goals and creativity from deep-lying positions. He, too, is expected to return only at the start of June, meaning Arsenal will be without his big-game experience against PSG.
Gabriel Magalhães – Hamstring Injury
Finally, Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal’s rock at the heart of defence, will miss the match due to a hamstring injury. His return is pencilled in for June 30, meaning he is out for the remainder of the season. Gabriel’s absence could be the most damaging of all, considering his commanding presence, aerial ability, and leadership at the back.
With six key players ruled out, Mikel Arteta will need to shuffle his pack carefully. Arsenal still boast a strong squad, but against a side like PSG, every bit of quality and experience counts. The likes of William Saliba, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka will have to step up even more to compensate for the missing stars as Arsenal look to take a crucial advantage back to Paris.
