Gunners Legend  Tips Arsenal to Beat PSG Over Two Legs Despite Paris Hype

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has backed his former club to come out on top against Paris Saint-Germain over two legs in their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash, despite widespread praise for PSG’s performance earlier in the competition.

Speaking on Sky Football, Merson shared his belief that Arsenal’s collective strength and consistency will shine through in the tie:
“I think Arsenal win over two legs. I think we still get carried away with the PSG of the first leg against Liverpool — one of the best team performances we’ve seen from anyone this season — but they still lost the game!”

It’s a bold statement, but one grounded in realism. PSG might have dazzled in moments this campaign, but they remain a team known for flashes of brilliance rather than sustained dominance. Despite boasting the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vitinha, and Ousmane Dembele, the French giants have often flattered to deceive when it matters most — something Arsenal will hope to capitalise on.

Merson’s assessment touches on a key point: while PSG can overwhelm opponents with moments of explosive quality, Arsenal have proven themselves a side capable of controlling games, grinding out results, and finding goals from various areas of the pitch. Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners have developed into a mature and disciplined side, capable of handling high-pressure knockout ties.

This season, Arsenal have dispatched heavyweight opponents like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in clinical fashion. With William Saliba marshalling the defence, Declan Rice bossing the midfield, and Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli offering attacking thrust, Arsenal look built for these moments.

Merson’s comments also serve as a subtle reminder not to get swept away by PSG’s star power. He pointed out that while the Parisian side were outstanding in spells against Liverpool, they still lost the match — proof that performance doesn’t always guarantee victory.

He added:
“That first-leg PSG performance had everything. Intensity, flair, energy — but they didn’t win. That’s what people forget. You need end product at this level, and Arsenal have shown they can deliver that.”

Arteta’s tactical evolution this season has been lauded, and the Spanish manager will no doubt have a plan to nullify PSG’s key weapons. Expect Arsenal to approach the tie with balance, mixing caution and ambition, knowing they have the tools to hurt Luis Enrique’s side both home and away.

In what is expected to be a blockbuster showdown, Merson’s confidence in Arsenal reflects the growing belief within the club and among its supporters. The Gunners are no longer just a team with promise — they are a team with pedigree and purpose.

If they can manage the moment, stay composed under pressure, and execute their game plan, there’s every chance Paul Merson’s prediction will come true — and Arsenal will find themselves in the Champions League final for the first time since 2006.
