Final steps revealed as Mikel Merino makes move to Arsenal

Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has travelled to London to finalize a deal with Arsenal for the transfer of midfielder Mikel Merino, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo. The Basque club are seeking a fee of around €40 million, including add-ons, for the highly-rated Spaniard.

The news of Aperribay’s visit suggests that a definitive agreement is close, with the two clubs reportedly on the verge of finalizing the transfer details. Merino’s potential departure marks a significant development for Real Sociedad, who are looking to rebuild their squad following his impressive performance last season.

The 28-year-old midfielder played a pivotal role for Sociedad, scoring five goals and providing three assists in the La Liga campaign. His ability to control the midfield, distribute the ball effectively, and contribute to the attack made him a valuable asset for the Basque club.

However, with Arsenal’s interest and a hefty offer on the table, Sociedad are prepared to part ways with Merino. This move follows Arsenal’s earlier acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee of around €45 million.

The Gunners are reportedly keen on adding Merino to their squad as they aim to bolster their midfield and build upon last season’s success. With the transfer nearing completion, both clubs will be hoping to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that secures Merino’s future and paves the way for a new chapter in his career.
