Summer Battle Brewing: Arsenal and Rivals Eye Shock Move For Tonali

Transfer News: Wednesday, February 5, 2026

Arsenal are poised for a major summer transfer battle with Manchester City and Chelsea for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with Pep Guardiola himself fuelling the fire by calling the Italian a “really top, top player”.

Interest in the 25-year-old Italian international surged on deadline day after Arsenal’s need for midfield cover increased with Mikel Merino’s long-term injury. While a January move did not materialize, Mikel Arteta is reportedly a “big admirer” and would love to pair Tonali with Declan Rice in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.

The competition is fierce. Reports suggest all three Premier League giants are eyeing a potential £100 million move. Guardiola, who was seen having a lengthy conversation with Tonali after City beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, gave a significant endorsement: “He’s a really top, top player. A top player”.

This public praise is seen by many as an early maneuver in the transfer market. While Arsenal are an attractive project, Tonali may view Manchester City as a club where starting opportunities are more guaranteed, especially with Guardiola’s long-standing familiarity with the player and his family.
