Mikel Arteta offered a measured but optimistic assessment after new signings Viktor Gyökeres and Cristhian Mosquera made their unofficial debuts for Arsenal during the club’s pre-season friendly loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Though the Gunners fell short in the London derby clash, the introduction of the two summer arrivals in the second half provided fans a first glimpse of what they could bring to Arteta’s evolving squad.
Gyökeres, who joined from Sporting Lisbon after a prolific spell in Portugal, was brought on with just under 10 minutes to play. Though he didn’t get on the scoresheet, the Sweden international showed flashes of his physical presence, strong link-up play, and movement off the ball — all qualities that have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-forwards.
Mosquera, the 21-year-old defender signed from Valencia, also made his first appearance in red and white. Despite the limited minutes, he looked composed in possession and aggressive in his positioning, characteristics Arteta values highly in his centre-backs. His timing and comfort with the ball at his feet stood out even in a short cameo.
Speaking after the game, Arteta said: “I think they’re going to add a lot of value. It was a short one, but when they play against Villarreal, I’m sure it will be a bit different.”
The Arsenal boss was keen to stress that it’s still early days for both players, especially given that they only recently joined the squad after completing medicals and formalising their transfers just days earlier. Gyökeres, in particular, has had a busy few weeks with travel, contract formalities, and acclimatising to a new club and league.
The loss to Spurs was a reminder that pre-season results often take a backseat to performance and integration. For Arsenal, the match served as a testbed for building match fitness and experimenting with new combinations. Arteta rotated heavily and gave opportunities to several young players alongside his new additions.
While the final score may not have been favourable, the manager appeared far more focused on the process of team building. Arsenal’s next fixture, against Villarreal, is expected to feature more minutes for both Gyökeres and Mosquera as they continue their adaptation to Arteta’s tactical demands.
For supporters, the excitement around both signings remains high. Gyökeres arrives as the club’s new No. 9 with big expectations, and his goal-scoring record speaks for itself. Mosquera, though less heralded, is viewed internally as a long-term asset who could evolve into a top-class defender under Arteta’s guidance.
With Arsenal entering the final stretch of pre-season preparations, the goal is to blend the new arrivals seamlessly into a side already brimming with talent. If Arteta’s early words are anything to go by, both Gyökeres and Mosquera are poised to play key roles — not just in the upcoming season, but in the club’s long-term ambitions.
