Arsenal are finally closing in on one of the most anticipated signings of their summer transfer window, as Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres is set to fly to London on Friday to undergo a medical ahead of a move to the Emirates Stadium, according to AS.com.
The 26-year-old Sweden international has long been at the top of Arsenal’s striker shortlist as the club sought a powerful and clinical No. 9 to lead their attack next season. After weeks of negotiations with Sporting CP, an agreement is now close, and Gyökeres is preparing to complete the formalities of the transfer.
A deal worth in the region of €65 million plus add-ons is believed to be the structure being finalised. Arsenal have been in dialogue with the Portuguese club for several weeks, and the breakthrough came after Gyökeres himself expressed a strong desire to join the North London outfit. His commitment to the move has played a key role in accelerating the deal, with the striker even reportedly prepared to make financial concessions to ensure it happened.
Gyökeres enjoyed a sensational 2023/24 season at Sporting, scoring 29 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions. His all-round forward play — combining strength, pressing, link-up ability, and lethal finishing — made him a standout figure across Europe and attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. However, Arsenal moved decisively, guided by new sporting director Andrea Berta and backed by manager Mikel Arteta, who is eager to add a striker that complements the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Ødegaard.
The Swedish forward is expected to arrive in London on Friday, where he will undergo his medical and finalise personal terms — which are already agreed in principle — on a five-year contract. Arsenal plan to announce the signing shortly after the medical is completed, potentially making Gyökeres their second marquee addition of the summer window.
His arrival is viewed as a major statement of intent as Arsenal look to strengthen their squad for a renewed Premier League title challenge and their return to the UEFA Champions League. Gyökeres offers a different dimension to Arsenal’s attack — physically dominant, direct, and proven at leading the line on his own — which could be vital in breaking down deeper defences and offering variety when Plan A is not working.
The move is also significant from a squad management perspective. With questions surrounding the futures of some attacking players, including Leandro Trossard and Folarin Balogun, Gyökeres is expected to immediately slot in as a central figure in Arteta’s plans for the 2025/26 campaign.
As Arsenal prepare to embark on their pre-season tour of Asia, the club will be keen to have Gyökeres join the group as soon as possible to integrate into Arteta’s system and start building chemistry with his new teammates.
Barring any last-minute complications, Viktor Gyökeres is set to become the latest addition to an ambitious Arsenal squad — one hungry to bring silverware back to the Emirates.
