Mikel Arteta Explains Arsenal’s Recent Transfer Dealings with Chelsea
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shed light on his club’s growing transfer relationship with Chelsea in recent years, offering insight into why the Gunners have regularly turned to their London rivals for talent. Speaking candidly during a press conference, Arteta addressed questions about the increasing number of players moving from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium.
“Probably because they have some great players and a lot of players!” Arteta said with a smile. “We try to focus on the players we want to sign, regardless of the club they are in.”
Historically fierce rivals on the pitch, Arsenal and Chelsea have nevertheless conducted several high-profile transfers between each other in recent seasons. From Jorginho’s move in January 2023 to the recent arrival of Noni Madueke this summer, it’s become a notable trend under Arteta’s stewardship.
What once may have been seen as an unlikely path due to the rivalry has become more pragmatic in the modern transfer landscape, especially given Chelsea’s bloated squad and Arsenal’s growing ambitions. Arsenal have shown they are willing to exploit opportunities when quality players become available—even if it means negotiating with a direct competitor.
Arteta’s comments underline Arsenal’s strategic flexibility in the transfer market. Rather than being influenced by the badge on a player’s shirt, the focus has remained on quality, availability, and fit within the squad. Chelsea’s squad overhaul in the Todd Boehly era has led to many players becoming available, and Arsenal have smartly capitalised on the situation.
Jorginho was signed in a low-cost move that added leadership and composure to Arsenal’s midfield. Meanwhile, Madueke’s arrival provides the Gunners with a young, dynamic wide option who can rotate with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. Both signings reflect Arsenal’s current model of mixing youth with experience, while also bolstering depth for a side competing on multiple fronts.
Arteta made it clear that sentiment plays no role in recruitment. Whether a player is at Chelsea, Manchester United, or any other club, Arsenal will act decisively if the player aligns with their profile.
“We don’t look at the club badge when evaluating talent,” Arteta added. “It’s about what the player brings on and off the pitch. That’s the only focus.”
This mindset has been key to Arsenal’s revival under Arteta, who has built a competitive and cohesive team capable of challenging for major honours. Transfers from Chelsea have been just one piece of that puzzle.
While Arsenal benefit from Chelsea’s surplus, the repeated transactions may also indicate mutual respect between the two clubs at the negotiating table. In a footballing era where cross-city transfers are more common, the relationship between Arsenal and Chelsea appears to be evolving from one of hard rivalry to occasional cooperation—at least in the boardroom.
For Arsenal and Arteta, it’s simple: if a Chelsea player fits the project, they’re fair game.
