Arsenal are hoping to reach a breakthrough in their negotiations with Sporting CP over the signing of prolific striker Viktor Gyökeres this weekend, with just a small portion of the add-ons still under discussion. That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who reports that the deal is now in its final stages, with both clubs edging closer to a total agreement that would allow the player to travel for a medical in London.
The Gunners have already agreed a fixed fee of around £55 million with Sporting for the Swedish international, but negotiations over the structure and conditions of an additional £8.5 million in potential bonuses have slowed the finalisation of the deal. These add-ons are believed to relate to Gyökeres’ individual performance targets and Arsenal’s success in both domestic and European competitions.
Gyökeres has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal and is said to be waiting in Portugal for the green light to travel to London. Once the final pieces of the agreement fall into place, the 26-year-old will undergo a medical and complete the formalities of a long-term contract with Mikel Arteta’s side.
The Swedish forward has been one of Europe’s standout performers this past season, scoring 43 goals and registering 15 assists across all competitions for Sporting. His blend of power, intelligent movement, and finishing has made him an ideal target for Arsenal, who are looking to add a consistent goalscorer to complement their dynamic attacking unit.
Mikel Arteta has made signing a striker a top priority this summer as the Gunners prepare to mount another title challenge and return to the Champions League. Despite impressive campaigns from players like Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard, the need for a more traditional, prolific centre-forward has remained a key area for reinforcement.
Arsenal’s technical team, including sporting director Edu Gaspar, has been working around the clock to finalise the terms with Sporting. The Portuguese club, while resigned to losing their star striker, are determined to extract maximum value from the sale, especially given Gyökeres’ €100m release clause.
The negotiations have also been complicated by interest from other clubs in recent months, but Arsenal have remained the most serious and advanced contenders. Their willingness to meet Sporting’s valuation — even if structured with bonuses — has put them in pole position to secure Gyökeres’ signature.
Sources close to the talks believe that an agreement could be finalised before the start of next week. Arsenal are hopeful that resolving the final issues over the weekend will allow them to schedule the player’s medical early next week and announce the signing shortly after.
If successful, the deal would mark a significant step forward in Arsenal’s summer business, and a major statement of intent heading into the 2025/26 season. For now, the club and fans alike await the final green light — with Gyökeres ready and waiting.
