Arsenal’s Top Left-Wing Target Revealed as Mikel Arteta Eyes Attack Reinforcement

Arsenal’s transfer plans are accelerating this summer, and while securing a new striker is the Gunners’ top priority, it’s now been revealed that a wide forward – particularly on the left – is also high on the club’s agenda. According to reliable journalist David Ornstein, Arsenal are keeping a very close eye on one standout name: Nico Williams.

Speaking on the club’s evolving transfer strategy, Ornstein shared new insights into the thinking behind Arsenal’s recruitment direction, revealing that a new winger is likely to arrive at the Emirates before the start of the 2025/26 season. While a number nine remains the main target, the club is determined to strengthen out wide as well.

“9 is Arsenal’s first priority,” Ornstein said. “But not far off that is this wide player. I would expect somebody to come in this summer. You would imagine nominally to the left, but it’s not impossible someone comes in who can play on both sides.”

That comment strongly suggests Arsenal are looking for a dynamic, flexible winger who can add goal threat, creativity, and width to Mikel Arteta’s attacking arsenal. And when it comes to specific names, Ornstein revealed that one player stands above the rest in the club’s plans.

“I don’t think there is anyone much higher in their thinking than Nico Williams,” he said. “We need to pay close attention to that situation.”

Williams, 22, has become one of the most exciting young wide players in Europe following a stellar season with Athletic Bilbao. With blistering pace, close control, and a growing end product, the Spain international has attracted attention from several elite clubs – but Arsenal appear to be leading the race for his signature.

His current release clause reportedly sits at €58 million, though talks have already begun between Athletic Bilbao and the player over a potential contract extension that would increase that amount significantly. For Arsenal, the window to move may be narrow, and they could be forced to act quickly if they want to land their man before the clause increases or competition intensifies.

From a tactical perspective, Williams could provide immediate value. Though primarily a left winger, he has also featured on the right, making him an ideal option to rotate with Bukayo Saka or even play alongside him in certain setups. His profile fits perfectly with Arteta’s desire to build a fast, fluid, and interchangeable forward line.

With Andrea Berta now leading the club’s recruitment strategy and a busy summer expected at the Emirates, the pursuit of both a central striker and a wide forward looks set to define Arsenal’s transfer campaign. And based on Ornstein’s latest revelations, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Nico Williams is at the heart of that plan.

Whether the Gunners can beat off competition and meet the financial demands remains to be seen – but their intent is unmistakable.
