Arsenal are actively weighing up two major striker options for the summer transfer window, with BBC Sport revealing fresh insight into the club’s pursuit of Benjamin Šeško and Viktor Gyökeres. Both players have been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, and according to the report, the Gunners have explored both deals as they look to bolster their attacking line ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The club’s search for a new No.9 has been one of the key priorities heading into the summer. Mikel Arteta wants to add a more physical and clinical striker to complement his fluid attacking system, with both Šeško and Gyökeres fitting the profile in different ways.
According to BBC Sport, Šeško has “near universal backing” within the Arsenal hierarchy. The 21-year-old RB Leipzig striker has long been on the club’s radar and is considered a player with elite long-term potential. Standing at 6ft 5in and blessed with pace, mobility, and composure in front of goal, Šeško is seen as a forward who could lead the Arsenal line for years to come.
However, the Slovenian international would come at a premium. His release clause is understood to be higher than that of Gyökeres, and Leipzig are under no pressure to sell unless that clause is met. That financial reality has prompted Arsenal to also seriously consider Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres as an alternative.
Gyökeres More Economical, But a Strategic Detour
While Šeško is viewed as the long-term solution, Gyökeres presents a more cost-effective option in the short term. The Swedish striker, who has enjoyed a phenomenal season with Sporting, scoring over 40 goals in all competitions, is reportedly available at a lower fee due to a more accessible release clause.
However, the BBC report notes that signing Gyökeres would represent a “diversion from Arsenal’s longer-term strategy.” While the 26-year-old is in his prime and would bring immediate impact, he may not offer the same long-term development curve that Šeško promises. Even so, Gyökeres’ physical presence, pressing intensity, and proven goalscoring ability at club level make him a compelling option for a team looking to challenge on multiple fronts next season.
Arteta and Edu Weighing Final Decision
Both deals are being actively explored, according to the BBC, and much will depend on financial flexibility, player preference, and how each option fits into Mikel Arteta’s tactical vision. Arsenal are expected to make a final push for one of the two soon, with the club eager to wrap up their striker business early in the window to allow time for pre-season integration.
Whether Arsenal opt for the long-term trajectory of Benjamin Šeško or the immediate firepower of Viktor Gyökeres, one thing is clear — the Gunners are preparing to make a major investment in their forward line. Either signing would be a statement of ambition from a club determined to take the final step in their journey to becoming champions.
