Arsenal Legend Blasts Arteta’s Big Mistake in Arsenal’s PSG Meltdown

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has questioned Mikel Arteta’s tactical decisions in the Gunners’ recent UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, pointing to the lack of midfield stability as a key factor in their downfall. Merson believes the absence of Thomas Partey proved costly and that Arteta’s selection gambles may have backfired at the worst possible time.

Speaking after the match, Merson didn’t mince his words: “I wasn’t shocked by the fact that PSG dominated Arsenal in midfield. The Gunners got overrun because Thomas Partey wasn’t playing.” The former midfielder, known for his direct and honest analysis, emphasized that Arsenal lacked the steel and control required in such a high-stakes encounter.

Arsenal were dealt an early blow in the first leg, conceding control of the midfield to a vibrant PSG side led by the relentless energy of players like Vitinha and Warren Zaïre-Emery. The Gunners struggled to retain possession and were forced into defensive errors as the Parisians exploited the gaps between the lines.

Merson believes the answer was within Arteta’s squad, had he made different choices. “I would have played Myles Lewis-Skelly in midfield and asked Mikel Merino to play up front,” he explained. “Arsenal made too many changes for a game like that in my opinion.” This comment alludes to the experimental nature of Arsenal’s setup on the night, with a reshuffled lineup that lacked cohesion at times.

Arteta’s decision to omit Partey — who has recently returned from injury — was seen by some as a precaution. But Merson argues that even a not-fully-fit Partey would have added the necessary structure and leadership in the middle of the pitch. Without him, Arsenal’s midfield lacked its usual bite, allowing PSG to assert themselves from the outset.

The match saw Arsenal struggle to control the tempo, with passes frequently misplaced and second balls often falling to PSG players. Although the Gunners did rally in the second half, they lacked the midfield anchor to dictate the game or break down PSG’s pressing game effectively.

Looking ahead to the second leg at the Parc des Princes, Merson believes the return of Partey could be pivotal. “When Partey comes back in the second leg, that midfield will be a lot stronger for sure,” he said. With Arsenal needing a result in Paris to progress to the final, the Ghanaian’s inclusion could be the key to turning the tide.

Despite the setback, Merson remains hopeful. He acknowledged that Arsenal have the talent and tactical discipline to bounce back but insisted that Arteta must learn from the mistakes of the first leg. “Big games require big decisions,” he noted, “and sometimes you can’t afford to experiment when the stakes are this high.”

Arsenal fans will be hoping that their team, bolstered by a stronger midfield and sharper approach, can deliver in Paris and keep their Champions League dream alive.
