Arsenal’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final has left fans dreaming of a historic triumph — but Real Madrid winger Lucas Vázquez has issued a sharp reminder that the tie is far from over.
Speaking confidently ahead of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, Vázquez made it clear that the Spanish giants have no intention of bowing out quietly. Despite the daunting deficit, he believes the team’s legacy and mentality make anything possible.
“If there’s a team that can turn around a 3-0 loss, it’s Real Madrid,” Vázquez said, sending a direct message to Mikel Arteta’s side. “The Madridistas will be with us.”
Real Madrid’s reputation for stunning comebacks in the Champions League is legendary. From their miraculous turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain in 2022 to their dramatic victories over Chelsea and Manchester City that same year, Los Blancos have shown time and again that no lead is safe when they are involved.
Vázquez’s words serve as both a rallying cry for Real Madrid fans and a warning to Arsenal that the job is far from done. While the Gunners produced a near-perfect performance in the first leg — dominating possession, controlling midfield battles, and scoring three unanswered goals — the return leg in Madrid poses a very different challenge.
The Bernabéu is a fortress, and its atmosphere on European nights is unmatched. Vázquez referenced the importance of the fans, knowing how critical their energy will be as Madrid attempt to do the improbable.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will surely take note of Vázquez’s comments and use them as motivation to keep his squad focused. Complacency is the last thing Arsenal can afford against a team with Real Madrid’s pedigree. Arteta will remind his players that, despite their advantage, they must approach the second leg with the same intensity and discipline that earned them the first-leg victory.
For Arsenal, the key to progressing will be controlling the tempo, avoiding early pressure, and remaining composed under the weight of Madrid’s expected onslaught. Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, and Thomas Partey will again be crucial in the midfield battle, while Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli will need to be sharp on the counterattack.
Defensively, the Gunners will be tested in ways they were not at the Emirates. Real Madrid are expected to throw everything forward — and with players like Vinícius Jr., Mbappe, and Jude Bellingham, they remain a potent threat.
While Arsenal can be proud of their performance so far, Lucas Vázquez’s bold declaration is a reminder that the Champions League often produces the unexpected. Arsenal are in the driver’s seat — but as history shows, nothing can be taken for granted when facing Real Madrid.
