Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique remains confident ahead of their massive Champions League semi-final clash against Arsenal, despite PSG suffering a shock 3-1 defeat at home to Nice on Friday evening.
The loss ended PSG’s unbeaten run in Ligue 1 this season and raised some concerns among fans about the team’s form heading into their biggest European test yet. However, Enrique quickly moved to calm any fears and sent a defiant message during his post-match press conference.
When asked if the defeat made him worried about facing Arsenal, Enrique said:
“Based on what I saw, I’m signing up straight away for Tuesday in London and the return leg. Not for the result, obviously, but I saw a team that had 30 chances to score. I’m not worried at all. We attacked, didn’t calculate, and we came up against a goalkeeper who made some incredible saves. We are the best team in France, by far, we proved it. We have to be brave now and think about winning the Champions League.”
Despite the surprising loss, Enrique was keen to highlight the positives. PSG dominated possession, created a mountain of opportunities, and only poor finishing — along with an inspired performance from the Nice goalkeeper — prevented them from taking all three points.
The Spaniard stressed that the approach and attacking mentality shown against Nice is exactly what he wants to see when they face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. He believes that if PSG can be more clinical in London, they have every chance of securing a positive result to bring back to Paris.
“There’s no time to doubt ourselves,” Enrique continued. “The important thing is that we stay true to our style. This team is built to attack, to control games, and to create chances. If we continue doing that, results will come.”
PSG’s players are also being encouraged to maintain their confidence despite the setback. Sources close to the club suggest that the mood in the dressing room remains upbeat, with many players viewing the Nice defeat as a timely reminder to sharpen up before taking on a well-organized Arsenal side.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will have taken notice of PSG’s vulnerabilities. Despite fielding a full-strength lineup, PSG conceded three times at home — something Mikel Arteta and his players will no doubt look to exploit. However, Arsenal will also be wary of PSG’s attacking threat, especially if the French side creates as many chances as they did on Friday.
With both teams desperate to reach the final, the tie is perfectly poised to deliver two thrilling legs. Enrique’s confidence could either inspire PSG to rise to the occasion or, if Arsenal take advantage of their defensive lapses, prove to be misplaced.
One thing is certain — Enrique has no intention of parking the bus in London. PSG are coming to attack, and he believes they have what it takes to overcome Arsenal and move one step closer to Champions League glory.
