In the aftermath of Arsenal’s stunning 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, goalkeeper David Raya has highlighted an unsung hero of the night — Jakub Kiwior. The Polish defender, who has often found himself on the fringes of the starting XI, stepped up in emphatic fashion on one of the club’s biggest European nights in years.
Speaking after the match, Raya was full of praise for Kiwior, saying: “We know how good he is. The lack of games, sometimes it can take you a few games to get going — his performance was top, he kept them quiet. Saliba, Timber & Myles [Lewis-Skelly], I think they did a terrific job.”
It was a performance of maturity and composure from Kiwior, who played a key role in shutting down Real Madrid’s dangerous front line. Despite not being a regular starter this season, he delivered a disciplined display at the back, demonstrating strong positioning, anticipation, and intelligent distribution.
For Raya, Kiwior’s performance was a reminder of the depth and quality that exists within Mikel Arteta’s squad. With Arsenal missing some senior defenders earlier in the season and rotating regularly across competitions, players like Kiwior are often required to step in without the rhythm of weekly starts. That didn’t seem to affect the 24-year-old on this occasion.
Raya also singled out the rest of the defense, with William Saliba once again imperious at the back, Jurrien Timber continuing his impressive return from injury, and youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly making headlines with his fearless and energetic display at left-back. The back line’s cohesion and communication throughout the match limited Real Madrid to very few clear chances — a rare feat against a team known for its European pedigree and attacking quality.
Kiwior’s calmness under pressure, especially against the likes of Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo, was a standout feature. He combined well with Timber on the right and supported the midfield by stepping forward when needed. It was a performance that may have gone under the radar for many watching, but within the Arsenal camp, it was clearly appreciated.
Raya’s comments also reflect the togetherness and mutual respect within the squad. Even as the spotlight shines brightly on goal scorers like Declan Rice and Martinelli, it’s the understated contributions from players like Kiwior that often make the biggest difference in these high-stakes fixtures.
As Arsenal prepare for the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, they will take confidence from the fact that every player — starter or backup — is capable of delivering when called upon. Kiwior’s performance against Madrid is a timely reminder of just how important squad depth is in the latter stages of the Champions League.
David Raya’s tribute to his teammates, especially Kiwior, underlines the collective spirit Arsenal have built under Arteta. And if they are to finish the job in Madrid, it will be that same unity and belief that carries them over the line.
