Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has opened up about the injury struggles his team has faced throughout the season, highlighting the remarkable resilience that has kept them in contention for major honors. Despite losing key players for extended periods, the Gunners have remained competitive in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Arteta has had to deal with several long-term absences this season, significantly impacting Arsenal’s squad depth and tactical options. Speaking about the situation, the Arsenal boss expressed his frustration but also praised his team’s ability to adapt.
“It’s been like this the whole season,” Arteta said. “Martinelli, missing three months. Saka, four months. Havertz, four months. Jesus, almost the whole season. How we have managed to be where we are with all those injuries.”
The injuries have meant that Arsenal have rarely been able to field their strongest starting XI. Gabriel Martinelli, one of the team’s most dynamic attackers, missed a crucial stretch of the campaign. Bukayo Saka, arguably Arsenal’s most influential player, was out for four months, robbing the team of his creativity and goal-scoring threat. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus also faced lengthy spells on the sidelines, further testing the squad’s depth.
Despite these setbacks, Arsenal have remained highly competitive, which speaks volumes about the depth of the squad and the tactical flexibility Arteta has implemented. Players such as Leandro Trossard, Reiss Nelson (before his departure), and Emile Smith Rowe (before leaving the club) have stepped up when needed, while youngsters like Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have been integrated into the first team.
Defensively, Arsenal have also had to cope with injuries. Jurrien Timber, signed in the summer, suffered a long-term injury at the beginning of the season, and now Gabriel Magalhães has joined the list of sidelined players. Arteta’s ability to rotate and still produce results has been a testament to his coaching acumen.
One of the most impressive aspects of Arsenal’s season has been their ability to grind out results despite being short on key personnel. The team’s mentality has been crucial in ensuring they remain in the hunt for the Premier League title and the Champions League.
Arteta has often spoken about the importance of fostering a winning mindset within the squad, and his words are reflected in the performances on the pitch. The players have shown a willingness to fight through adversity, ensuring that even in difficult moments, Arsenal remain competitive.
With the final stretch of the season approaching, Arsenal will hope that their injury crisis eases. The return of key players, including Saka, has already provided a significant boost. However, with crucial fixtures against Real Madrid in the Champions League and several tough Premier League matches remaining, Arteta will need every available player to step up.
Regardless of how the season ends, Arsenal’s ability to cope with injuries and remain a force to be reckoned with is a testament to the progress the club has made under Arteta’s leadership.
