Arteta Furious Over Controversial Penalty Call in Arsenal’s 1-1 Draw Against Everton

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta did not hold back in his post-match reaction following his side’s 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park, blasting the decision to award a penalty to the hosts early in the second half. The Gunners had taken the lead through Leandro Trossard, but a contentious penalty decision allowed Everton to level the match and deny Arsenal two crucial points in the title race.

Speaking to beIN Sports after the final whistle, Arteta made his frustration clear:
“We conceded a penalty that, in my opinion, was NOT a penalty, very clear. There is not enough contact and the contact starts outside, inside there is nothing.”

The incident occurred just minutes into the second half when Myles Lewis-Skelly was adjudged to have brought down Jack Harrison inside the box. Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot, and after a brief VAR check, the decision was upheld. Iliman Ndiaye converted the penalty to make it 1-1, and Arsenal could not find a winner despite dominating possession and chances.

Arteta’s Anger Reflects High Stakes

Arteta’s reaction reflects the fine margins that are currently defining Arsenal’s season. The Gunners are in the middle of a tense title race and cannot afford to drop points — especially not through controversial decisions. With just seven games left in the Premier League and Liverpool slightly ahead in the table, every point counts.

This isn’t the first time this season that Arteta has voiced his disapproval of officiating decisions. The Arsenal boss has made it clear he expects consistency from the officials and VAR — something he feels his team didn’t get on this occasion.

A Point Gained or Two Dropped?

Despite the draw, Arsenal remain second in the Premier League with 61 points from 31 games. But it’s hard not to view this result as two points dropped, particularly given the control Arsenal had over large portions of the match. They generated an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.83 and created numerous chances in the second half, yet failed to break Everton down again after the equaliser.

The draw not only impacts Arsenal’s league campaign but also comes at a time when the club is dealing with multiple injuries to key players. Gabriel Magalhães has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury, and Jurrien Timber only just returned to matchday involvement.

Focus Turns to Real Madrid

Arsenal must now turn their attention to Tuesday night’s blockbuster Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium. Arteta will need to regroup his players quickly, both mentally and physically, after the emotional toll of a frustrating afternoon on Merseyside.

While Arsenal still have all to play for domestically and in Europe, Arteta’s angry reaction to the penalty shows just how costly and painful a single decision can be in the high-pressure environment of elite football.
