Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey could be forced to accept a reduced wage if he is to stay at the club beyond the current season, according to ESPN journalist James Olley. With the Ghanaian international’s contract nearing its final stages, discussions over his future have intensified—and a pay cut may be a key condition for any potential renewal.
Partey, 31, has enjoyed a strong second half of the 2024/25 season after overcoming persistent injury issues that plagued his previous campaigns. While his performances on the pitch have largely been solid when fit, Arsenal appear to be looking to restructure their wage bill, particularly with a number of key contract extensions and potential summer signings on the horizon.
According to Olley, one source has indicated that Partey would need to agree to lower wages if he wishes to remain part of Mikel Arteta’s squad moving forward. With the club aiming to bring in a new first-choice defensive midfielder and improve depth across the board, tough decisions are being made on high earners like Partey.
The midfielder joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 after the club triggered his £45 million release clause. Since then, he’s shown glimpses of his quality but has struggled for consistency due to various injuries. Now in the final months of his deal, the Gunners are at a crossroads regarding his long-term role in the squad.
Arteta has spoken positively about Partey’s recent contributions, highlighting his importance in key games, especially in the absence of Jorginho. However, with Jorginho injured and Declan Rice often deployed in a more advanced role, Partey’s presence has been needed more than ever.
Despite this, Arsenal are wary of committing to another long-term, high-value contract with a player entering his 30s—particularly one with an inconsistent injury record. That has led to speculation that the Gunners may allow Partey to walk away for free when his deal expires in June, or explore a cut-price sale if suitors emerge this summer.
Saudi Pro League clubs have shown interest in Partey in the past, and it remains to be seen whether they will reignite their pursuit. European clubs, including teams in Serie A and Turkey, have also been loosely linked. However, Partey himself is reportedly open to staying in north London if a suitable agreement can be reached.
Ultimately, the decision may come down to how much the midfielder is willing to sacrifice to remain at Arsenal. A pay cut could allow him to continue at a club that he clearly values, but with Arsenal also targeting younger midfielders in the transfer market, a fresh challenge abroad may soon beckon.
As the summer approaches, Arsenal fans will be watching closely to see how the Partey saga unfolds—whether it’s an amicable extension on new terms or a respectful goodbye after five rollercoaster seasons in red and white.
