As the 2024/25 Premier League season reaches Gameweek 29, a detailed comparison of Arsenal’s performance against last season reveals some key trends. While the Gunners remain in second place, the numbers show a decline in overall form compared to the previous campaign.
Arsenal’s total points after 29 games stand at 58, which is seven fewer than at the same stage last season (65). When compared to equivalent fixtures, the Gunners are down by eight points, indicating a slight drop-off in consistency.
A major concern lies in the attacking department. Last season, Arsenal had scored 70 goals by this point, while this year, they have managed only 53—a significant 17-goal decrease. Even when looking at the same fixtures from 2023/24, the team is still nine goals worse off (62 vs. 53). This suggests a reduction in attacking efficiency, possibly influenced by injuries, tactical adjustments, or squad rotation.
Despite struggles in front of goal, Arsenal’s defense has remained solid. The team has conceded 24 goals—the exact same number as last season at this stage. This defensive resilience has been crucial in keeping Arsenal competitive in the title race, even as the attack has faltered.
However, due to the drop in goals scored, Arsenal’s goal difference has taken a major hit. Last season, their goal difference stood at +46, whereas this year, it’s +29—a 17-goal decrease. This reflects the team’s reduced dominance in games, making victories harder to secure.
At home, Arsenal’s form has largely remained stable. They have collected 31 points at the Emirates, compared to 47 points last season, showing only a minor dip. Notable victories include the 5-1 win over Manchester City and the 2-1 triumph against Tottenham, highlighting their ability to step up in big games.
However, away from home, Arsenal have struggled more. They have secured 27 points on the road, compared to 42 points last season. Losses to teams like West Ham and Brighton have played a role in this decline, showing that Arsenal are dropping points in key away fixtures where they previously excelled.
One noticeable change is Arsenal’s increased disciplinary issues. The team has received five red cards this season, compared to just two at this stage last year. Additionally, yellow cards have risen from 62 to 78 per match, suggesting a more aggressive or frustrated playing style.
Despite the drop in goals and points, Arsenal remain firmly in the title hunt. However, if they are to challenge Manchester City, they must improve their attacking output in the remaining fixtures. Key players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus will need to step up, while midfield creativity from Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard will be essential.
The final stretch of the season will determine whether Arsenal can overcome these statistical setbacks and push for their first Premier League title in over two decades.
