Arsenal have officially booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a 2-2 draw against PSV at the Emirates Stadium. While the Gunners couldn’t replicate their emphatic first-leg performance, which saw them thrash the Dutch side 7-1, they did enough to comfortably progress with a 9-3 aggregate score.
The match got off to a fast-paced start as Arsenal took the lead in just the sixth minute. Raheem Sterling, who was instrumental throughout the game, played a precise pass to Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian defender, returning to the starting XI for this fixture, carried the ball forward before cutting inside and striking a precise finish into the net. Out of respect for his former club, Zinchenko raised his hands in an apologetic gesture toward the PSV supporters.
However, PSV responded quickly. Just 12 minutes later, Ismael Saibari found space in Arsenal’s defensive third, leading to a well-placed pass from Til to Ivan Perisic. The Croatian winger made no mistake, scooping a sublime shot into the top-right corner past David Raya to bring the visitors level at 1-1.
As the first half progressed, Arsenal continued to press for a second goal, and their efforts paid off in the 37th minute. Once again, Sterling was the provider, delivering a pinpoint cross into the box. Declan Rice rose highest and powered a header past PSV’s goalkeeper to restore the Gunners’ lead.
With a commanding 9-2 aggregate advantage, Arsenal looked in control heading into the break.
Despite Arsenal’s dominance, PSV showed resilience and managed to equalize once again in the 74th minute. An impressive through ball from Isaac Babadi found Anwar El Ghazi, who cleverly chipped the ball over Raya to make it 2-2.
The Dutch side may have been eliminated, but they finished their Champions League campaign on a high note, giving their traveling fans something to cheer about before heading home.
While Mikel Arteta’s men would have preferred to end the tie with a win, their qualification for the quarter-finals was never in doubt. The Gunners finished the game with an xG (expected goals) of 1.25, slightly outperforming PSV’s 1.48, proving that both teams had their fair share of opportunities.
Arsenal now turn their attention back to the Premier League, where they remain in second place with 55 points after 28 games. Their next challenge will be a crucial clash against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
With their European ambitions still alive and a Premier League title race heating up, Arteta and his squad will be eager to maintain momentum in both competitions.
