Kieran Tierney’s future at Arsenal finally gets decided after Celtic’s push

Kieran Tierney will remain at Arsenal for the final six months of his contract as the Gunners push for the Premier League title before sealing a return to Celtic in the summer. According to The Telegraph, a pre-contract agreement has already been reached, ensuring the Scottish defender will reunite with his boyhood club at the end of the season.

Tierney, 27, has spent this season on loan at Real Sociedad, but injuries have disrupted his time in Spain, limiting his impact in La Liga. Arsenal had initially considered the possibility of selling him this January, but with Oleksandr Zinchenko’s inconsistent form and ongoing injury concerns, keeping Tierney in the squad for the remainder of the season became the preferred option.

Mikel Arteta, who has worked with Tierney since arriving as Arsenal manager in 2019, values the defender’s experience and leadership qualities. With the Gunners locked in a tight Premier League title race, his presence in the squad could prove beneficial, particularly as the season reaches its crucial stages. Despite falling out of favor in recent seasons due to Arteta’s tactical preferences and the arrival of Zinchenko, Tierney remains a popular figure among Arsenal fans, known for his commitment and defensive resilience.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been keen to bring Tierney back to the Scottish champions, and reports indicate that all parties have now agreed on a summer transfer. Tierney previously played under Rodgers at Celtic before his £25 million move to Arsenal in 2019. During his time at the Emirates, he has made over 120 appearances and helped the club win the FA Cup in 2020.

Rodgers recently spoke about the deal, acknowledging that while he would have liked to complete the transfer this month, Arsenal’s stance means they will have to wait until the summer. “Ideally, it happens now, but he’s still an Arsenal player,” Rodgers said. “I think everyone is agreed that it will definitely take place in the summer. If we can do it beforehand, then great.”

For Arsenal, keeping Tierney for the final months of the season provides additional squad depth as they compete on multiple fronts, including the Premier League and Champions League. Injuries have already tested Arteta’s squad this season, and having an experienced left-back available could be crucial in the coming months. Tierney’s defensive solidity and ability to play as a traditional full-back—compared to Zinchenko’s inverted role—gives Arteta tactical flexibility depending on the opposition.

Meanwhile, for Celtic, securing the return of one of their most beloved academy graduates is a major boost. Tierney was a key player for the club before his departure, winning multiple league titles and domestic trophies. His return will strengthen their squad for next season’s domestic and European campaigns.

As the season progresses, Tierney will now focus on helping Arsenal in their pursuit of silverware before saying his final goodbyes in the summer. With a title race heating up, he could yet play an important role in Arsenal’s ambitions before completing his long-anticipated return to Celtic Park.
