Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has highlighted the tactical problems the Gunners face as opposition teams increasingly deploy ultra-defensive setups to stifle their attacking threat. Speaking after Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at the Emirates Stadium, Rice acknowledged the growing trend of teams sitting deep and flooding the midfield to nullify Arsenal’s creative players.
“Teams now, to stop us, they’re just going to keep playing back fives and back fours, with a five in the middle,” Rice told Arsenal Media. “It’s down to us to break that down and find different ways to do that.”
The Struggles Against Defensive Walls
The game against Ipswich was a prime example of the challenge Rice described. Despite dominating possession and spending most of the first half in Ipswich’s territory, Arsenal managed only one goal—a 23rd-minute strike from Kai Havertz. The Ipswich defense, packed with numbers, made it difficult for Arsenal to create clear-cut opportunities, forcing them into intricate passing sequences and speculative shots from distance.
Rice admitted that Arsenal need to improve their approach, particularly in the second half of games, where their intensity sometimes wanes.
“We spent the whole first half in their half, and in the second half, we had a bit of a sloppy start again, which we need to improve [on],” Rice explained. “As the game stretched and became open, we had two or three chances to kill the game off, and it’s down to us to do that.”
Finding Solutions
Breaking down well-organized defensive setups is a problem many top teams face, and Arsenal is no exception. With Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, the Gunners lack one of their most consistent creative outlets, making it even harder to unlock stubborn defenses.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has emphasized the need for flexibility and adaptability, and Rice echoed that sentiment. The team must find new ways to break through, whether through quicker ball movement, improved off-the-ball runs, or set-piece innovation. Players like Gabriel Jesus, Martin Ødegaard, and Leandro Trossard will need to step up to fill the creative void left by Saka’s absence.
A Lesson Learned
Despite the struggles against Ipswich, Arsenal came away with three crucial points, a testament to their ability to grind out results even when not at their best. Rice’s comments suggest that the team is aware of the challenges they face and is committed to addressing them.
“We’ve got the quality to figure it out,” Rice added. “It’s just about making better decisions in those moments and staying focused for the full 90 minutes.”
Looking Ahead
As Arsenal prepare for upcoming fixtures, including a challenging clash against Brentford, the focus will be on refining their attacking play to counter defensive blocks. With players like Declan Rice leading by example in midfield, the Gunners remain confident in their ability to overcome these hurdles and maintain their momentum in the Premier League title race.
