Arteta’s Shock Plan: Unlikely player among five contenders to replace injured Saka on right wing

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta faces a tough challenge ahead as injuries to key wingers Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling have left the team short of options on the right flank. Speaking during his latest press conference, Arteta addressed the situation, hinting at potential replacements while expressing confidence in the depth of his squad.

Arteta’s Options on the Right Wing

When asked about the players who could step into the right-wing role, Arteta provided an intriguing list of names, including Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, academy prodigy Ethan Nwaneri, and, somewhat surprisingly, Kai Havertz. While some of these players are already familiar with the role, Havertz’s inclusion raised eyebrows, as the German international is primarily known for his versatility in midfield and central attacking positions.

Gabriel Jesus has the energy and creativity to play wide, Martinelli’s speed makes him a threat anywhere in the attack, and Trossard has proven he can deliver from both wings. We’re also looking at Ethan [Nwaneri] as he’s been training well and showing real potential. Kai [Havertz] could be an interesting option; he has the intelligence and technical quality to interpret the role differently.”

A Tactical Dilemma

Arteta’s comments suggest he is considering a mix of experience and youth to address the challenge. Gabriel Jesus, who has often played as a center-forward, previously demonstrated his ability to excel on the wings during his time at Manchester City. His work rate and skill could make him a strong candidate for the right-wing spot.

Martinelli, traditionally a left-winger, offers pace and directness that could be utilized on the opposite flank. Trossard, meanwhile, provides a creative spark and has proven himself as a versatile attacking player since joining the Gunners.

The inclusion of 16-year-old Ethan Nwaneri reflects Arteta’s willingness to trust young talent in big moments. Having already made his Premier League debut last season, Nwaneri could offer a dynamic and fearless approach if called upon.

Havertz: The Wild Card

Perhaps the most intriguing option is Kai Havertz. Since arriving at Arsenal, the German has been used in various roles, but a right-wing deployment would be a new test for him. Arteta’s faith in Havertz’s footballing intelligence and adaptability suggests he could provide a different dimension to Arsenal’s attack, focusing more on link-up play and positional versatility rather than traditional wing play.

Balancing the Attack

Arteta emphasized the importance of maintaining balance in the team’s attacking structure, regardless of who fills the right-wing void. “We can’t just try to replicate what Bukayo or Raheem brings; we need to adapt to the strengths of the players available,” he explained.

Looking Ahead

With crucial fixtures on the horizon, including league games and Champions League clashes, Arsenal fans will be eager to see how Arteta navigates this challenging period. While losing Saka and Sterling is a setback, the manager’s confidence in his squad depth and tactical flexibility could prove decisive in ensuring Arsenal’s momentum doesn’t falter.
