Arteta Reveals the One Bright Spot in Arsenal’s Disappointing Draw Against Fulham

“I’m really pleased with the performance of Jakub,” Arteta told The Metro UK. “We had to change the whole unit as well. We had Jakub there and Jurrien [Timber] on the left, which we’ve never played before, and Thomas [Partey] as a full-back. And okay, he does it.”

The defensive reorganization could have been a recipe for disaster against a Fulham side that had beaten Arsenal in the same fixture last season. However, Kiwior and Timber showed composure and adaptability, while Partey provided stability on the right. Arsenal largely controlled possession and limited Fulham’s attacking opportunities, conceding just 0.14 xG in the second half.

Arteta also reserved praise for Jorginho, who slotted into midfield seamlessly in the absence of other key players. “Jorgi comes in, and he was excellent. That’s it—they [the regular starters] were not available, and we have to respond to that. I’m very happy with the way the team did.”

The performance of Arsenal’s stand-ins was a rare silver lining on an otherwise disappointing day. Arteta’s side dominated possession and created enough chances to secure all three points, but poor finishing and a disallowed goal left them settling for a draw.
