Arteta Reveals the One Bright Spot in Arsenal’s Disappointing Draw Against Fulham

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta found himself reflecting on a frustrating 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage, a result that saw the Gunners drop vital points in their pursuit of Premier League leaders Liverpool. While much of the post-match analysis focused on missed chances and a disallowed Bukayo Saka goal, Arteta chose to focus on the one positive takeaway from the match: the performances of his makeshift defensive unit.

With regulars Gabriel Magalhães and Riccardo Calafiori sidelined due to injuries, Arteta was forced to reshuffle his defense. Jakub Kiwior, who had yet to establish himself as a consistent starter, was paired with William Saliba in central defense. Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber, typically a right-back, filled in on the left side, and Thomas Partey operated as an unorthodox right-back. Despite these adjustments, Arteta was impressed by how the players adapted to unfamiliar roles.

“I’m really pleased with the performance of Jakub,” Arteta told The Metro UK. “We had to change the whole unit as well. We had Jakub there and Jurrien [Timber] on the left, which we’ve never played before, and Thomas [Partey] as a full-back. And okay, he does it.”

The defensive reorganization could have been a recipe for disaster against a Fulham side that had beaten Arsenal in the same fixture last season. However, Kiwior and Timber showed composure and adaptability, while Partey provided stability on the right. Arsenal largely controlled possession and limited Fulham’s attacking opportunities, conceding just 0.14 xG in the second half.

Arteta also reserved praise for Jorginho, who slotted into midfield seamlessly in the absence of other key players. “Jorgi comes in, and he was excellent. That’s it—they [the regular starters] were not available, and we have to respond to that. I’m very happy with the way the team did.”

The performance of Arsenal’s stand-ins was a rare silver lining on an otherwise disappointing day. Arteta’s side dominated possession and created enough chances to secure all three points, but poor finishing and a disallowed goal left them settling for a draw. The result leaves Arsenal in third place, six points behind Liverpool, having played one game more.

Despite the dropped points, Arteta’s comments suggest he sees the draw as a testament to Arsenal’s depth and ability to adapt to challenging circumstances. As the Gunners prepare for a crucial Champions League clash against Monaco, the manager will hope his side can build on the resilience shown by their makeshift backline.

For Arsenal, the focus now shifts to fine-tuning their attack and ensuring their defensive solidity translates into victories. With key players likely to return soon, Arteta will aim to turn these positives into consistent results.
