Arsenal legend opens up on some player that Mikel Arteta has failed to trust

Former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant has cast doubt on Raheem Sterling’s future at Arsenal, suggesting that manager Mikel Arteta no longer trusts the experienced winger. Speaking to Instant Casino, Pennant shared his thoughts on Sterling’s diminished role and why he believes the player is being overlooked for younger talents.

“Arteta Doesn’t Trust Raheem Sterling”

Pennant didn’t hold back in his assessment, pointing to Sterling’s omission in crucial games as evidence of Arteta’s lack of faith in the former Manchester City star.

“It’s clear to me that Mikel Arteta doesn’t trust Raheem Sterling,” Pennant said. “Against Everton, they needed some spark to open the door, and he was left on the bench. He’s getting overlooked for younger talent.”

The game against Everton, which Arsenal narrowly won, saw Sterling remain an unused substitute despite the team struggling to break down a resolute defense. For Pennant, this decision highlights a deeper issue regarding Sterling’s standing in Arteta’s plans.

Sterling’s Declining Influence

While Sterling’s arrival at Arsenal was met with excitement, his time at the club has been underwhelming so far. Pennant suggested that age and the emergence of younger players might be contributing to Sterling’s reduced involvement.

“There is a great player in there, of course, but he isn’t getting any younger,” Pennant explained. “I wouldn’t go as far as to say that he will get his contract terminated because of respect and the service he has given in the Premier League, but I don’t think he will be seen in an Arsenal shirt too often again.”

Sterling’s extensive career, which includes multiple Premier League titles and standout performances for both Manchester City and England, seems to be at a crossroads as his role at Arsenal diminishes.

Competition for Places

Sterling’s situation is made more challenging by Arsenal’s wealth of attacking options. The likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and even emerging talents like Ethan Nwaneri have been given priority in Arteta’s system. This fierce competition has left Sterling struggling to make a significant impact.

Arteta’s preference for younger, more dynamic players aligns with his long-term vision for the club, which emphasizes developing talent and building a team capable of sustained success. Sterling’s inability to secure consistent minutes could be a reflection of this strategy.

What’s Next for Sterling?

Despite Pennant’s grim outlook, it remains to be seen whether Sterling can turn his fortunes around at Arsenal. The January transfer window could offer him an opportunity to move elsewhere and revive his career. Alternatively, injuries and fixture congestion might force Arteta to rely on the experienced winger in critical moments but unfortunately for him, he’s on the sidelines as well.

For now, Sterling’s situation at Arsenal remains uncertain. While his pedigree and past accomplishments are undeniable, his future at the Emirates may depend on whether he can adapt to Arteta’s demands and prove his value in a squad filled with youthful energy and ambition.

Arsenal fans will hope that, if called upon, Sterling can still contribute to the team’s success as they push for silverware on multiple fronts.
