Saka reveals the way Arteta makes them defensively solid despite squad liking to attack

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has shed light on the key factor behind the Gunners’ impressive defensive solidity this season, despite their attacking intent: the unwavering emphasis on defensive responsibility instilled by manager Mikel Arteta.

Saka, a key player in Arsenal’s success, highlighted the manager’s constant reminders to the team about their defensive duties. “We’re all attacking minded, we want to go forward, but the manager has emphasised a lot the other part of the game,” Saka explained. “I’m sure if you stand on the sideline, you can hear him a lot when we’re out of possession!”

The 23-year-old acknowledged the sacrifices required to maintain a balance between attacking ambition and defensive discipline. “It takes a lot of sacrifice and discipline because, to be honest, I do want to be more forward, but it’s what the team requires,” he said. “When I see the results, we have a lot of clean sheets, so it’s paying off, and it encourages me to keep doing it – me, Gabi, the other players.”

Saka’s words underscore Arteta’s commitment to building a well-rounded team that can excel in both attack and defense. The manager’s insistence on defensive discipline has clearly had a tangible impact on Arsenal’s performances, as evidenced by their impressive clean sheet record.

Arsenal’s ability to maintain a strong defensive foundation while showcasing their attacking flair has been instrumental in their success this season. With Arteta’s continued emphasis on defensive responsibility, the Gunners will be looking to continue their strong form in their upcoming match against Southampton.
