Bukayo Saka has opened up about the atmosphere in Arsenal’s dressing room following their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates. Despite the hard-fought battle, the young winger expressed some disappointment, acknowledging that the Gunners fell short of their best in the second half. Reflecting on the performance, Saka stated, “Credit to Liverpool, they’re a good team, but we feel we didn’t show our best selves for the full 90 minutes.”
Arsenal initially looked dominant, racing into an early lead when Saka found the back of the net within 10 minutes. However, Liverpool responded quickly as Virgil van Dijk’s header leveled the score. Mikel Arteta’s men managed to regain control before halftime, with Merino’s powerful header securing a 2-1 advantage heading into the break. But Liverpool mounted pressure in the second half, and despite Arteta’s strategic defensive setup, injuries to Gabriel and Timber hampered Arsenal’s ability to hold their shape. Liverpool’s persistence paid off in the 81st minute, as Salah netted the equalizer, sealing a share of the spoils.
Reflecting on the shift in Arsenal’s performance, Saka added, “The first half, we showed our qualities, we dominated, we gave them nothing. Second half, we sunk back a bit, we weren’t at our best.”
With Arsenal holding third in the Premier League standings with 18 points from nine games, they now turn their attention to the League Cup, where they’ll face Preston North End on October 30. Following that, they face a crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle, where Arteta will undoubtedly hope to see his side maintain their intensity throughout the full 90 minutes.
