Arsenal Football Club has released a statement outlining their commitment to combating bigotry and discriminatory behavior, confirming that 24 supporters have been banned for abusive and discriminatory conduct during the 2023/24 season.
The statement details that 21 individuals were banned for in-stadium offenses, including assault, tragedy chanting, offensive gestures, and racism. Three additional members were banned for online abuse, encompassing racism, antisemitism, and sending abusive messages.
The club has imposed varying ban lengths, with 14 supporters receiving three-year bans, prohibiting them from attending any Arsenal matches, home or away, for that period. All other banned individuals have been issued a minimum one-year ban.
To combat online abuse, Arsenal has partnered with the data science company Signify Group, utilizing their Threat Matrix service to monitor social media channels and detect targeted abuse towards players and coaching staff. The technology has successfully identified and unmasked two abusive accounts this season, resulting in bans for the individuals involved.
Despite a 90% decline in online abuse detected among club members compared to the previous season, Arsenal acknowledges that online abuse remains a prevalent issue. In fact, the club saw a 24% increase in online abuse directed towards players and coaching staff in the 2023/24 season.
Arsenal emphasizes their ongoing collaboration with social media companies and law enforcement to address online abuse effectively and ensure appropriate action is taken against perpetrators.
