As Arsenal look to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 Premier League season, it appears that one of their existing defenders, Jakub Kiwior, could be on his way out of the club. According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Polish center-back may seek a move away from the Emirates Stadium in the summer transfer window.
“Jakub Kiwior could leave Arsenal in case of good proposal, with Riccardo Calafiori close to joining,” Romano revealed on his social media platform. “Understand there’s possibility for loan but only with a mandatory buy clause. Italian clubs are keeping close eye to the situation, no formal proposals yet.”
Kiwior, who joined Arsenal in January 2023, has largely played a backup role to the club’s first-choice center-back pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. However, the 22-year-old did manage to get some valuable game time during the second half of the 2023/24 season, when he filled in at left-back due to injuries within the squad.
Despite his limited playing time, Kiwior’s potential has not gone unnoticed, with Italian clubs reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation. The possibility of a loan move with a mandatory purchase clause could provide Kiwior with the opportunity to secure more regular first-team football and continue his development.
The potential departure of Kiwior coincides with Arsenal’s pursuit of Riccardo Calafiori, another highly-rated center-back. As previously reported, the Gunners are close to finalizing a deal for the 22-year-old, who is set to join the club from Serie A side Bologna.
Calafiori’s imminent arrival could pave the way for Kiwior’s exit, as Mikel Arteta looks to optimize his defensive options and provide sufficient playing time for all his center-back options. The 2023/24 season saw Arsenal finish second in the Premier League with 89 points, narrowly missing out on the title to Manchester City, who amassed 91 points.
As the transfer window heats up, Arsenal supporters will be keen to see how the club’s defensive setup evolves, with the potential departure of Kiwior adding an intriguing subplot to the club’s summer business.
