Martin Odegaard set to be named as new Arsenal captain

Odegaard will be given the captains armband at Arsenal according to reports.

Martin Odegaard is set to be given the Arsenal captaincy role ahead of the new season.

The Norweigian has been integral for Mikel Arteta set-up since his arrival on a permanent transfer last summer.

The Gunners have been without an official captain for some time now. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the last offical captain.

Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy after repeated disciplinary breaches, he eventually left for Barcelona in January.

Alexandre Lacazette was vice captain and next in line however, multiple players wore the armband during the period.

Odegaard wore it multiple times towards the end of the season and was tipped to be Arsenal’s next captain.

Mikel Arteta has previously hailed the 23-year-old’s leadership credentials. “He is moving in the right way”, Arteta said.

“He is the national team captain. He is one of the senior players here, for sure, even at his age, and it comes very natural to him.”

“His whole mindset, the way he prepares himself, the way he treats people, the way he plays the game, is just exactly what we want from an Arsenal player.”

Recently Arsenal’s captains haven’t had good history with the previous two captains being stripped of the armband. Arsenal fans will be hoping that Odegaard can offset that trend.

Odegaard joined Arsenal last summer for €35m from Real Madrid after spending six months on loan.
