David Luiz finally opens up about his possible departure from Arsenal

Arsenal signed David Luiz from Chelsea for £8million in the 2019 summer transfer window and it has in the last few days been confirmed that the gunners just gave him a one year deal even though most reports at that time said that he had signed a two-year deal. The Brazilian international has spoken out on his possible departure from Arsenal and Benfica, the club he’s been most linked with.

David Luiz did not have a great start to life as an Arsenal player since he immediately received criticism from his new fans after his first five Premier League games in which he gave away two penalties. Luiz has however been impressive in the first three months under Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal fans thought that the club would offer him a new deal since he was clearly their best defender this season despite his flaws.

Many reports have claimed that Luiz will go to Benfica after leaving Arsenal in July due to his contract running out and it looks like the gunners did indeed not offer him an extension as he says that he has spoken to the president of the Portuguese club about a possible return to Portugal.

“I have already spoken with Vieira. It will happen if the President permits it and fans want me back.” David Luiz reportedly told Portuguese outlet Record.

“To be able to wear that jersey again and enter the stadium is worth more than many trophies. Benfica doesn’t deserve me to come back without helping.”

The statement by David Luiz could be a clear sign that Arsenal have already told him that they will not offer him an extension and even though this has come out as a big surprise to many, it is however understandable on the club’s part as they already have many centre backs and William Saliba will be coming in next month.
